New Article in The Star, and Real Food Traveller!

Grape harvest is in full swing, and much like the rest of the growing season, it is a few weeks earlier than usual. As our wine making friends are excitedly crushing the vines’ fruits of labour, I have the pleasure to share a wonderful article in The Star, in addition to Real Food Traveller, both from earlier media tours from our very busy season. I am humbled by the beautifully written acknowledgement of our efforts here at Backyard Farm, and yet again we are included with but a few of the dedicated farmers and wine producers in our fantastic food and wine region. The article in Real Food Traveller has an inclusion of a few chosen recipes from Yvettes’ experience with us… I also wanted to note the rather fetching photo of young Kyle, also know as “the chosen one”, and Youngblood-the very first apprentice of Backyard Farm, though not to be the last…….looking for the next apprentice for the farm starting next late spring, so Kyle can pass along the knowledge he has acquired and we can continue and elevate our culinary experiences for all of our clients and winery partners…. Thanks you very much for the words of encouragement Lauren Miller and Yvette Cardozo, as well as the photos. Articles such as these inspire our intimate team to continue striving to elevate our culinary experiences in our beautiful region. The Vancouver Sun: Splendour in the Valley…

What an unbelievable summer thus far….2 weeks ago, I was a bit too busy picking cherries to post this great article, courtesy of Lucy Hyslop and found in the Vancouver Sun on July 2nd. Lucy joined us on a recent media tour to experience the “half corked marathon”, one of the most popular Wine country events every year. This year, 800-1000 people attended the marathon for wine and good times in the sunshine. Kyle and I had the opportunity to cook for this intimate group, and our efforts were recognized in this fantastic article showcasing our region. In addition to this media dinner, we partnered with Road 13 winery to provide a BBQ lunch, and we were found at Church and State providing a Backyard Farm Energy Bar for the participants. What a great weekend, and we are humbled that Lucy chose to write about us in this article in the travel section, along with some great industry peers and colleagues in our region. Congratulations Kyle!

I am such a proud mentor! Today it is official! It has been an amazing year and a half mentoring Kyle, aka. “the chosen one”…..In September of 2014, we began working together, and he was enrolled in his second year of culinary apprenticeship classes. Since then, he has been a huge part in the swift success of our business, and his abilities have taken leaps and bounds since the beginning. As the pictures show, he is always happy in the kitchen-in fact, I am fairly certain I have yet to see him on a day without a smile….. I have been incredibly fortunate for the mentors who have shared knowledge with me over the last 20 years. The evolution of our industry is based on this, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to continue this tradition of sharing experiences in the Backyard Farm kitchen with Kyle. When I took the leap on my own 4 years ago, I was looking to develop a career lifestyle of balance,  and future for my family. Two years in the kitchen alone, I certainly felt I was missing something. I was creating the opportunity for quality culinary experiences for our clients, with ever-changing menus based on what I “felt” like cooking on any given day. I developed my business to allow my creativity to be priority, and found that I was missing that certain person to share in the excitement.  In September of 2014, as luck would have it, a young Kyle showed up on the door, referred to me by his best friend. Prior to our meeting, I had asked...
